Well Done! As you're reading this article you've doubtless been pondering on retraining for a new career - so you've already done more than most. Less of us than you'd think are happy and fulfilled in our work, but most complain but just stay there. So, why not be one of the few who decide to make the change.
We'd recommend that in advance of taking any individual training program, you have a conversation with someone who has knowledge of the industry and can advise you. They can assess your personality and give you guidance on the right role for you:
* Is collaborating with others important to you? Would that be with the same people or with a lot of new people? Perhaps working alone on specific tasks may be your preference?
* What's important that you get from your chosen industry? - We all know that things have changed, look at building and banking for instance.
* How long a career do you hope to have once retrained, and will the industry offer you that opportunity?
* Do you have the assurance that retraining in your chosen sector will offer you employment opportunities, and have the ability to allow you to work until your pension kicks in?
Look at Information Technology, it will be well worth your time - it's one of the only growth areas in the UK and Europe. And the salaries are much higher than most.
Many students come unstuck over one area of their training which doesn't even occur to them: The way the training is divided into chunks and packaged off through the post. Often, you'll join a programme that takes between and 1 and 3 years and get posted one section at a time - from one exam to the next. This may seem sensible until you think about these factors: What if you find the order prescribed by the provider doesn't suit you. And what if you don't finish each and every section within the time limits imposed?
An ideal situation would be to have every piece of your study pack sent to you right at the start; the whole caboodle! Thus avoiding any future problems that could impede your capability of finishing.
When was the last time you considered your job security? Typically, this only rears its head when something dramatic happens to shake us. However, the reality is that our job security is a thing of the past, for all but the most lucky of us. In times of increasing skills shortfalls mixed with increasing demand though, we almost always discover a fresh type of market-security; driven by the constant growth conditions, companies are struggling to hire the influx of staff needed.
Looking at the computing market, a key e-Skills study demonstrated an over 26 percent skills deficit. Therefore, for each four job positions available throughout Information Technology (IT), companies can only find enough qualified individuals for three of them. This one reality alone underpins why the United Kingdom urgently requires a lot more workers to get trained and join the IT industry. Quite simply, acquiring professional IT skills over the years to come is almost definitely the greatest career choice you could ever make.
